Fed by dozens of minor rivers and streams (hence the name Drinker???), the Bebedero River passes through a wide variety of habitats, en route through Palo Verde.
Our day on the Bebedero gives access to these habitats and allows us a glimpse into the lives of many wild creatures? from birds to bats, from crocodiles to coatimundis. Along the first stretch of river, watch for White-collared Seedeaters and Stripe-headed Sparrows, on the grassy banks.
Streak-backed Orioles on the trees, and perhaps a Black shouldered Kite hovering overhead. See huge iguanas basking on heliconia and hummingbirds searching the orange-red blossoms for nectar.
In the stands of large trees, one can often find a roosting Laughing Falcon or Howler Monkeys lazing in the shade. In mangrove forest, you'll see increasing numbers of herons, egrets, ibis, Wood Storks and the flamboyantly pink Roseate Spoonbill. But we'll also search for more secretive species such as Boat billed Heron in quiet, side channels.
Areas of seasonally flooded, freshwater marsh change dramatically over the course of the year. Lushly green from May to November, they gradually shrink during the dry season. Huge flocks of resident Black-bellied Whistling Ducks and migrants such as Blue-winged Teal congregate in the remaining water and shorebirds feed en the mud flats.
